Website titles, canonical URLs and social preview tags

Write useful titles and descriptions, keep canonical URLs consistent and preview the links you share.

Even a strong page can underperform if its title, description, and social preview metadata are weak. Clean metadata helps search engines understand the page and helps people trust the link when they first see it.

Before you start

  • Write concise titles that explain the page benefit first.
  • Keep link previews consistent across search and social platforms.
  • Check suspicious or complex URLs before sharing them publicly.

1. Describe the actual page

Write a distinct title and description that match the tool or article. Do not promise formats or capabilities the page does not provide.

2. Choose one canonical URL

Use the same preferred address in internal links, metadata and the sitemap. Redirect genuine older URLs to their replacement.

3. Generate social metadata

Use Meta Tag Builder for Open Graph and social-card markup. Check the final page source, not just a draft snippet.

4. Verify crawlability

Make internal navigation real links. Use Search Console to inspect the page and check that the rendered page has useful content and no unintended noindex directive.

Worked examples

Metadata cannot force a ranking

A title is a description, not an indexing request. Google can rewrite snippets and chooses what to index and rank. Useful page content and working links still matter.

Check before you finish

  • Keep titles readable and benefit-led.
  • Write descriptions that match the actual page content.
  • Check share previews on major pages.
  • Avoid posting raw suspicious links without inspection.

Questions and answers

Do all pages need custom meta tags?

Important landing pages, tool pages, and blog pages benefit most. Smaller utility or archive pages can share a lighter template.

Why does URL encoding matter?

Encoding prevents links from breaking when they include spaces, symbols, or dynamic query values.
